Connect a domain to a website

Every website has one primary domain, the one you entered when you added it. A website can also answer on more names:

Type Use it for
Subdomain A name in front of the website’s primary domain, such as shop.example.com. It can have its own folder, so it can show different content from the main site.
Alias Another domain that shows exactly the same site, such as example.ca alongside example.com. It shares the primary domain’s folder.

The types you can add, and how many, depend on your plan. To run a completely separate site on another domain, add a new website instead.

Open Websites, select the website and select Domains in its navigation bar.

A website's Domains list with a primary domain, an alias and a subdomain, and the alias's menu open with Manage, Make primary and Delete. Marker 1 is beside the Add domain button, marker 2 beside the Type column, marker 3 beside the DNS status icons and marker 4 beside the open menu.

The Type column marker 2 shows each domain’s role, and Document root shows the folder it serves files from.

A warning icon under DNS status marker 3 means the domain does not point to Sheernox yet; hover over it to read the message. Until the domain points here, visitors cannot reach the site on that name. See Point your domain to Sheernox.

The Add new domain page with Alias selected. Marker 1 is beside the Subdomain and Alias choice, marker 2 beside the Domain field, marker 3 beside the Redirect to the primary domain option and marker 4 above the Add button.
  1. On the website’s Domains page, select Add domain marker 1.

  2. Choose Subdomain or Alias marker 1.

  3. Fill in the domain marker 2:

    • For a Subdomain, enter only the part in front, such as shop. It is added in front of the website’s primary domain. Document root sets its folder; leave it as it is to use a new folder named after the subdomain.
    • For an Alias, enter the whole domain, such as example.ca, without www..
  4. For an alias, choose whether to select Redirect to the primary domain marker 3. Selected, visitors to the alias are sent on to the primary domain, so the address bar always shows one name. Cleared, the site appears under the alias’s own name.

  5. Select Add marker 4.

The new domain appears in the list. If it is not registered with Sheernox, point it to Sheernox at the company where it is registered.

  1. On the website’s Domains page, select the menu button (three dots) at the end of the alias you want to use, then Make primary marker 4.

  2. Read the confirmation and select Make primary.

The old primary domain becomes an alias. It is not redirected to the new primary domain automatically.

Select the menu button at the end of the domain’s row, then Delete, and confirm. Any email accounts on that domain are deleted with it.

Manage in a domain’s menu opens its settings: its document root, DNS records, email authentication, mail routing for email hosted elsewhere, and DNSSEC.
