Renew, update or move a domain
Keep the domain renewed
Section titled “Keep the domain renewed”A domain is registered for a set period and must be renewed before it ends. Renewal invoices arrive with your other Sheernox invoices; pay them from the client portal. See View invoices and make payments.
When a domain expires, the website and email on it stop working, even if your hosting is paid. Renew on time: after a while an expired domain can be lost and registered by someone else.
How renewals and non-renewal work is set out in the Terms of Service.
Keep your contact details up to date
Section titled “Keep your contact details up to date”Every domain has an owner, called the registrant, with a name, address, phone number and email address. Keep these correct:
- Registries require accurate details. A domain whose owner details are false or out of date can be suspended.
- The registrant email receives important notices, such as transfer approvals and requests to confirm your details. If it stops working, you can miss them.
- The registrant is the legal owner. If you register a domain for a business, put the business as the registrant, not an employee or your web designer.
Change the registrant and contact details of a domain registered with Sheernox in the client portal.
For .ca domains, the registrant must meet CIRA’s Canadian Presence Requirements. See Extra rules for .ca domains.
Move a domain to another registrar
Section titled “Move a domain to another registrar”You can transfer a domain away from Sheernox at any time, as long as it is not inside a registry lock period.
- Check the timing. Most extensions, including .com, do not allow a transfer within 60 days of registration or a previous transfer. Start well before the expiry date.
- Unlock the domain and get its authorization code. In the client portal, turn off the domain’s transfer lock and get its authorization code (also called the EPP code).
- Start the transfer at the new registrar and give it the authorization code.
- Approve the transfer if the registrant email address receives a request to confirm it.
If your website or email uses the domain, the transfer does not move them. Keep the nameservers and DNS records unchanged until the transfer finishes, so nothing goes offline.
WHOIS privacy from Sheernox ends when the domain leaves. Check whether your new registrar offers it.
