Transfer a domain to Sheernox
Transferring a domain moves its registration to Sheernox, so you renew and manage it in the same place as your other services. Your website and email keep working during a transfer, as long as you do not change the domain’s nameservers or DNS at the same time.
Before you start
Section titled “Before you start”Check these at your current registrar:
- The domain is not about to expire. Start the transfer at least two weeks before the expiry date. An expired domain may not transfer.
- The domain was not registered or transferred in the last 60 days. Most extensions, including .com, block transfers during that period.
- The registrant email address works. Approval requests and notices go to it during the transfer.
- You know where your DNS is hosted. If your current registrar also hosts your DNS records, copy them down first, in case they stop being served when the domain leaves.
Transfer the domain
Section titled “Transfer the domain”-
At your current registrar, unlock the domain. This is often called turning off the transfer lock or registrar lock.
-
At your current registrar, request the domain’s authorization code, also called the EPP code or transfer key.
-
Start the transfer in the client portal by ordering a domain transfer, and enter the domain name and authorization code when asked.
-
Watch the registrant email address. Approve the transfer if you receive a request to confirm it.
-
Wait for the transfer to finish. Your old registrar may send its own email asking you to approve or reject it. Approving it can make the transfer finish sooner.
In most cases the transfer adds one more year to the domain’s registration, so you do not lose the time you already paid for.
After the transfer
Section titled “After the transfer”- WHOIS privacy is included at no extra cost wherever the extension allows it.
- The domain renews with your other Sheernox services. See Invoices and payments.
- Moving your website or email to Sheernox too? Ask for a free migration by opening a ticket.
If the transfer gets stuck
Section titled “If the transfer gets stuck”Open a support ticket with the domain name and the date you started the transfer. The most common causes are a domain that is still locked, an incorrect authorization code, or a registrant email address that no longer works.
