Troubleshoot with a quick test

Quick Test checks a website, server or service once, from many monitoring stations at the same time. Use it when a site seems down for some people but not others, to confirm a fix, or to test an address before you add a monitor. It does not use any of your plan’s tests.

  1. Open Monitoring and select Quick Test.

  2. Choose the Test type: Website for a web page, Ping, or a service such as HTTPS, DNS, SMTP, IMAP or TCP.

  3. Enter the URL (for a website) or the hostname, and the Port if the test type needs one.

  4. Under Test from, keep the default monitoring stations, or select + to choose stations by region or tick ALL MONITORING STATIONS.

  5. Select Test!.

Results appear location by location as each station finishes, and the page refreshes until all are done.

Each station reports its status and response time. A failure at only some locations points to a network or routing problem rather than the site itself.
Quick Test Result for a website test of www.example.com, listing ten monitoring locations grouped into North America, Europe and Asia/Pacific. Each shows a status of OK and a response time in milliseconds, with a do traceroute link; one location is still Testing.
  • OK at every location: the site or service is answering. If someone still cannot reach it, the problem is likely on their side, such as their network or a cached DNS record.
  • Failing everywhere: the site or service is down, or the address or port is wrong.
  • Failing from some locations only: a network or routing problem between those regions and your server. Select do traceroute beside a failing location to see the network path from that station and where it stops.
  • Slow from far-away locations only: normal distance delay. Slow everywhere points to the server.

When you contact support about an outage, include the quick test results; they show what UptimeHawk saw from each location. See Get help from Sheernox support.
